Chapter Seven

Despite how well the hospital was run in his absence, Tse returned to chaos. He worked overtime for a week. To be fair, the chaos came along with him.

It always amazed him how the technology that was supposed to make things simpler could, at times, wreak utter havoc. The installation of the new software didn’t go smoothly, and somehow a virus was introduced to the older software. Everything was a mess, and to make matters worse, he missed Felix.

It’s ridiculous to miss a man I’ve known for two days. No matter how often he told himself that, he only missed Felix more. Phone calls were scarce. The mural Felix had been commissioned to do had been given a shorter deadline—something about Ezra worrying his friend Marco might not live to see it done.

Which put Tse’s panicked, pouty attitude into perspective. He and Felix had time to work things out, to see if they could be a couple. Other people had much worse situations going on.

At least texting was easier. If Tse wasn’t so exhausted by the time he got home, and if Felix wasn’t working late into the night on the mural, they might have been able to have a few video chats.

Ten days after he’d left Texas, Tse sat in his office, staring at the pad of paper in front of him. It was long past time for him to go home, but he didn’t want to be alone. Granted, no one was in the office with him, but hospitals were never empty and the sounds of nurses and doctors as well as patients and visitors chased off the quiet. The intermittent calls over the hospital PA system also added to the feeling of not being alone.

Felix had texted him, informing him Marco had taken a turn for the worse, having developed pneumonia in both lungs. Tse had seen perfectly—formerly—healthy people die from double pneumonia; he knew how serious an illness it was. And from all he’d learned about Marco, the man was in frail health. Tse didn’t know details other than the current update, but Felix had mentioned Ezra’s concern for his friend.

Tse ignored his cell ringing when he saw it was his brother calling. Shilah was almost two years younger than Tse and they were close, which was a large part of why Tse didn’t answer Shilah’s call. Shilah would pick up on Tse’s funky mood and start grilling him.

Tse hadn’t told anyone in his family about Felix and was surprised Joe hadn’t gossiped about him, either. It wasn’t because Tse was ashamed of Felix—he simply hadn’t had time to visit with his family in person and he didn’t want to tell his mom and dad something so personal over the phone. He wanted to be face-to-face with them when he explained how he’d met a man he thought he could fall in love with.

Like sitting here at the office isn’t avoiding them now? But it was too late to go visit his parents. They were often in bed by ten, and it was after eleven now.
